There is a click, a soft urging, almost whispered too soft to hear, but you can sense that you are being beckoned somewhere, lead to an elaborate open door with wood panels and great curls of gold leaf. You cannot see what is beyond the door, but it smells sour and sharp. Before you can turn over the thought of should you or shouldn't you, if you are the kind, there is a quiet push at your back and through the door you go . . .

Elliot takes a ring off the small table. It is made of a dark silver with the Nightray crest on the front, and he rolls it in between his fingers.

"Aah, what does it look like?"

"You have some brains, then. It's mourning."

Can I ask who . . . ?

He gives a deep, heavy sigh, eyes closed.

"My mother, my uncle, Fred, Claude, Ernest, and Vanessa."

"Sorry? Hah, you don't have to be sympathetic. It was my fault for not realizing."

Why shouldn't I be sympathetic? That's—awful . . .

"Because it was my fault. Failing my family, letting it fall to pieces . . . Can you understand what that is truly like?"

"Then, don't waste your sympathy. It may have been my fault, but I will also right this. I won't be lost to despair."

There's a short laugh, but it isn't tense.

"No, it won't, but I don't want to be looked down or pitied, either. If you could understand, then that sympathy, as equals, would mean something."

Elliot stands up, shooting out of his seat, like he can't stay seated and tense anymore.

"Who's the fool! I said it was my fault, and I am not accepting the blame for his sins. But Fred and my uncle! He's responsible, too!"
