There is a click, a soft urging, almost whispered too soft to hear, but you can sense that you are being beckoned somewhere, lead to an elaborate open door with wood panels and great curls of gold leaf. You cannot see what is beyond the door, but it smells sour and sharp. Before you can turn over the thought of should you or shouldn't you, if you are the kind, there is a quiet push at your back and through the door you go . . .

That would be highly romantic in another scenario . . . However, Vincent peeks out under the pillow before furiously sitting up, going for the ring immediately, and Gilbert covers his hands.

Look, Gilbert wants you to leave it on too.

Gilbert does not look pleased to be lumped in with that, but he does slowly let go of Vincent's hand. Vincent, in turn, still looks incensed and is staring down Kaoru angrily.

That's kind of an acknowledgement?

You can't avoid your family like that, Vincent. He needs you.

I'm not telling you to go lavish sympathy on him. He'd probably just punch you anyway. It's up to you what you do, just . . . as long as you go. . . . And don't look at me like that.
